“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.”

-Robert Frost

In every culture, poems express deep connections with culture, history, victories, and struggles. Every poem tells a story, and every story has a different desire and emotion.

Poetry is a special type of writing that can help you improve your English reading skills. They are often shorter than most reading articles, but they can be challenging despite their short length.

Regardless of your current English level, you can get started with reading poetry.

Here are some of the few things you can do to enjoy it and love it:

Read it.

Poetry paints a rich picture of life, a story that is juicy to the core.

The main purpose of reading the poems is to create enthusiasm for reading. Always turning it into a skills drill can defeat that purpose.

When you have some time to kill, instead of playing games on your cell phone or texting friends or checking their status updates, try reading.

Be patient.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to understand every single word you find in the poem, and don’t give up after the first few lines because you think it’s too difficult.  Take your time and focus on understanding the gist (main ideas) before trying to understand all the details.

Listen to ambient music.

It is important to pick music without lyrics otherwise you’ll find yourself singing to them instead of reading. Some types of music to consider: classical, instrumental, jazz. Be sure to turn the volume to low or it will be distracting.

Take a break every now and then.

When you start to zone out from your poem what you need to do is take a break from reading and go do something else. Sometimes all you have to do is get up and do something for a minute or two to be refreshed. This will enable you to concentrate better on what you are reading and allow you to enjoy it more.

Get uncomfortable.

Read in funny positions. How can you get bored if you’re in an uncomfortable position? If you’re uncomfortable you can’t fall asleep or get bored.

Get up and drink.

If you’re thirsty; quench it. Depending on the season and your drink of preference you can have hot or cold drinks like coffee and hot chocolate or coke and ice tea. Makes reading more delicious!
